Album art for Turisas2013

Another week is upon us and this is the time we admire musicians fit to grace the very halls of Valhalla and this week it’s my favourite MOFO (Musicians of Finnish Origin) Turisas.

An obvious choice for this feature I think you’ll agree but I was wearing my Turisas t-shirt so I thought it was time.

They premiered their new album in full on a Finnish radio station earlier this week and it’s an absolute belter, one of my most anticipated albums this year. (more…)

Keep Calm and…try not to get soaked

It’s that time of the year again mother-truckers. It’s time for us to give you the highs and lows of the festival in convenientĀ bite sizedĀ chunks.

This year’s festival was pretty wet, not the total washout of last year but not the driest of places.

As always bands are rated between 0 and 5 so lets get down to it. (more…)

Mathias Nygard in full flow

LAST week I was privileged enough to have a chat with Turisas front man and battle metal god Mathias “Warlord” Nygard.

Recently, while pondering the wonders of the world, my mind stumbled to the idea of whether or not the mainstream media‘s avoidance of this branch of music has meant that some of us have taken to compulsive collecting.

Despite the examples of Chris Evans and Elton John, two of the most famous audiophiles in the world and owners of two of the largest independent CD and Vinyl collections in the world, the question remains: are the followers of niche markets forced to resort to compulsive music collecting, be it CD, Vinyl or MP3, to be able to appropriately keep up to date with their passion? FINNISH Battle Metal band Turisas blew away the crowd at an intimate gig in Newcastle this week.

The Varangians stormed the stage with their epic blend of melodic vocals and squealing violin solos.

With support coming in the form of Finnish power metal band Kiuas and the Taiwanese answer to Cradle of Filth Chthonic the diversity was matched only by the crowds delight at each of the acts. (more…)

With the end of the weekend in sight Ā the traditional British weather once again made an appearance.

The heavens opened to an extent where two campsites were flooded out by 5pm but that didn’t stop any of the acts from giving outstanding performances, or from drawing a huge crowd. (more…)
