While THORsday ended last week we’re keeping it’s spirit alive with our brand new Black Metal Thursdays.

In this feature we’ll bring you the best of from the original, to the obscure and to the more modern and commercial successes.

All of this has a place in black metal, even the sell outs can still have a truly earth shattering sound an this is proven in no small part by this week’s entrant, Cradle of Filth.

Having seen their name in the title a lot of black metal fans won’t have even opened the article, whereas others will have merely opened it to spew bile all over the comments section to keep our moderators busy (they’ll still be published, just checked for libellous material).

Personally I love these Brits.

Their concepts are great, bringing the obligatory black metal mythologies and legends to the fore with some amazing albums, and giving the genre a depth of sound that is rarely seen.

The inclusion of female vocals alongside Lord Filth’s rumbling poetry, squealing obscenities and grunting aggression rounds off the package to bring a new rhythm to the scene, which is something some other bands would do well to emulate.

The length of their tracks lends and almost prog element to the music as well, giving them time to explore the concept to its full.

I will admit that a lot of other black metal bands lose my attention midway through a track as the squealing and riffing blends into a pleasant white noise in my ears, however the variety of Cradle of Filth holds my attention and lifts and lowers me with at its whim.

My favourite track at the moment comes from the more recent album “Darkly, Darkly Venus Aversa” centring on the demon Lillith, first wife of the biblical character Adam, entitled “Lilith Emaculate”.

This track brings together all of the elements of Cradle of Filth that I love in a handy six minute chunk.

Well that’s all for this week. If you have any suggestions for next weeks black metal Thursdays comment below or get in touch via Facebook Twitter or email
